Are Americans even Americans anymore?

The USA has long been a country accepting of other nationalities.  We've opened our arms wide for people looking for a better life, to immigrate to our country to be our brothers and sisters.  Or so we intended.  What happened to this dream?

Let's take a look at things now.  I don't know how many of you have been to Miami (an experience, by the way, that I do NOT recommend).  When you go to Miami, many of the street signs, billboards, etc, are all in spanish.  When you go into the stores, everyone speaks spanish.  I've gone into stores, to buy something, and been rudely yelled at because I didnt speak spanish.

What's this about?!?  I mean, arent we in America?  The USA?!? Isnt English our national language?  I sure thought it was.  That was until I read in the newspaper that Miami had voted and changed it's official language to spanish.  What?!?

Living down here in South Florida, I can tell you from experience that Miami has slowly been taken over by the spanish-speaking people.  Now, mind you, normally I never generalize people like that.  But, you have all of the people who are immigrating from Cuba.  And all of the people coming in from Haiti.  Next thing you know, you have parts of town that are actually called "Little Cuba" and "Little Haiti".  The people who live there are constantly in the news, yelling about how much the USA and its laws infringe on their rights as Cubans (or insert another nationality here).  How much the USA disrespects them, and how much more grand thier home country is.  They ignore our laws and trod on our flag.  I cannot tell you how many times seeing something like this on TV or in the paper has just disgusted me to no end.

Umm...people... if your country is so great, then WHY ARE YOU HERE?!?!

I'll tell you why. Because their country isnt so great after all. They may love it, and are still loyal to it, but they come here because America is the land of opportunity.  And we allow them to protest and complain why?

Freedom of speech.

Now, I agree completely with the concept of Freedom of speech, but when does freedom of speech become the equivalent of Terraforming.  I mean, we have large groups of people that have immigrated here into South Florida.  Miami, which used to be a major city and tourist destination (some parts of it still are), has now become a spanish speaking district.  If you dont speak spanish, you are looked down upon, and in some places, downright threatened.

It was Theodore Roosevelt who in 1907 delivered a speech delivering his ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN:

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

If you want to see it for yourself, here's the link on snopes:  http://www.snopes.com/politics/quotes/troosevelt.asp

So I ask you this.  What's happened to those ideas?  Why does our government pussy-foot around such topics?  Is it too much to ask for, that our 1 country need be a united country (United States? Hmmm), in our language and our loyalties??  How is it that cities, on US soil, now have a different language just because people who immigrated to us don't respect us enough to learn our language?

Think about it this way.  Lets say that a group of people from the mid-us, all english speaking people, up and moved to Peru.  Now, living in Peru, they began insisting that the natives there start speaking English in their own cities, and spouting off about how much better life is in the USA, then in Peru.  What would you expect them to do?  I certainly wouldnt expect them to sit by, allow thier country to be insulted, and then begin speaking English for a group of people who just immigrated there.  So why should we?

Am I wrong for feeling this way?  I love my country.  Why should I have to sit by and see it be abused by people who dont?

I'm almost ashamed to be an american nowadays. It seems that it has become every americans duty to try and screw everyone they can. Whatever happened to american values in the home OR business? No loyalty anywhere. At home, most neighbors would rather spit on you then wave hello. In business? How many businesses still offer good benefits or pension plans? Not many.

We're going to hell in a handbasket. We arent america, the free. We're america, the greedy.

That's already been done. But by the Spanish. And now they all speak Spanish (with the expection of a few stubborn individuals who insist on saving their native Quetchua...what losers)

But the Spanish took it one step more: Convert or die. So the Incas converted...and most then died.

Americans like to think they invented everything. But weren't first to apply the cultural erasor that the 'Geek' is so anxious to apply. Hey - so those Miami people may look down on the rest of us if we don't speak espanish. It's good for us normal Americans to learn how we treat everyone else...
